La PSOE y los Tres Grados de Obediencia
Estamos en la Semana Santa de Pasión de Pedro, en que se ha bunkerizado en la Moncloa, como un Patriarca en su Otoño, como un Tirano Calaveras allende el Hundimiento... para comulgar con su alma y debatir si vale la pena seguir resistiendo los embates y asechanzas de la Ultraderecha, o bien, oponiéndose a este mar de fango, acabar con él y con todo de una vez.
Seguro que medita mientras sujeta una Calavera de las del Valle.
En fin, que entretanto están sus piquetes de Charos y Charas haciendo el paripé del fervorín, gritando "Pedro, No te Rindas", cantándole la Internacional, y celebrando la fiesta de la democracia, porque hay Partido, y no pasarán.
Merece la pena, siempre merece la pena!!!

Cuánto amor irradian Sánchez y sus gentes. Yo creo que el anuncio del lunes va a ser la institución de un ministerio más, quizá para Begoña: el Ministerio del Amor. Antes era todo por la patria, o por el Partido, ahora el amor y el partido son lo mismo.
En fin, que todo este despliegue del pensamiento y el sentimiento de la PSOE me ha traído a la mente los tres grados de obediencia de los jesuitas, según los describe Unamuno en La Agonía del Cristianismo.
"En las cartas de Íñigo de Loyola (de San Ignacio) hay una (...) que dirigió desde Roma el 26 de marzo de 1553 a los padres y hermanos de la Compañía de Jesús de Portugal, aquella en que establece los tres grados de obediencia. El primero 'consiste en la ejecución de lo que es mandado, y no merece el nombre por no llegar al valor desta virtud si no se sube al segundo de hacer suya la voluntad del Superior; en manera que no solamente haya ejecución en el efecto, pero conformidad en el afecto con un mismo querer y no querer... Pero quien pretenda hacer entera y perfecta oblación de sí mismo, ultra de la voluntad (ojo al parche, ULTRA de la voluntad...) es menester que ofrezca el entendimiento (que es otro grado, y supremo, de obediencia) no solamente teniendo un querer, pero teniendo un sentir mesmo con el Superior, subjetando el propio juizio al suyo, en cuanto la devota voluntad puede inclinar el entendimiento'. Porque 'todo obediente verdadero debe inclinarse a sentir lo que su Superior siente'. Es decir, creer verdadero lo que el Superior declara tal." (Ensayos, I, 1003-04).
Aunque esto también lo expresa bastante bien Orwell en la escena final de 1984, cuando Winston llora de emoción porque por fin ama al Partido, y cree firmemente que 2+2 son 5... siempre que el Partido así lo decrete.
Y con estos bueyes mentales hay que arar.

“How does our perspective change after the initial experience? What distortions emerge through repetition?” (17).
“Rereading has many joys, but suspense is not one of them” (18).
(JAGL: But why not? Not the same kind of suspense, but a subtler one perhaps, a suspense proper to rereading—what shall I see that escaped me before, or which did not exist in my reading before. A stronger versions: Who have I become, and who shall I become as I reread?).

Definition of Cultural Materialism

Cultural
materialism:
vii “a combination of historical context, theoretical method, political commitment and textual analysis offers the strongest challenge [in the field of literary criticism] and has already contributed substantial work.
- Historical context undermines the transcendent significance traditionally accorded to the literary text and allows us to recover its histories;
- theoretical method detaches the text from immanent criticism which seeks only to reproduce it in its own terms;
- socialist and feminist commitment confronts the conservative categories in which most criticism has hitherto been conducted;
- textual analysis locates the critique of traditional approaches where it cannot be ignored.
We call this ‘cultural materialism’.
‘Culture’ is to be taken in the wider sociological sense, not the narrower evaluative one, which is just “one set of signifying practices among others”.
‘Materialism’ “insists that culture does not (canot transcend the material forces and relations of production. Culture is not simply a reflection of the economic and political system, but nor can it be independent of it. Cultural materialism therefore situates the implication of literary texts in history.
A play by Shakespeare is related to the contexts of its production—to the economic and political system of Elizabethan and Jacobean England and to the particular institutions of cultural production (the court, patronage, theatre, education, the church).
Moreover, the relevant history is not just that of four hundred years ago, for culture is made continuously and Shakespeare’s text is reconstructed, reappraised, reassigned all the time through diverse institutions in specific contexts.
What the plays signify, how they signify, depends on the cultural field in which they are situated. That is why this book discusses also the institutions through which Shakespeare is reproduced and through which interventions may be made in the present.”
Finally, cultural materialism is not politically neutral—any cultural practice has a political significance, and cultural materialism is commited to the transformation of the social order.

“you cannot reread a novel, you can only
read it” (340) (—cf. Heraclitus). Vs. Nabokov’s opposite dictum (i.e. that you cannot read a novel, you can only reread it).
“To paraphrase Wallace Stevens: two people talking about one book are two people talking about two books” (342).
Birkerts seems to imply that time makes each of us two different people reading (no actually rereading) two different books.
Hindsight modifies the second reading, and we no longer read the same thing, so there is no “rereading” strictu sensu.
“The subtlest and most potent pleasures of rereading derive from this strange correspondence between written narrative and the narrative that we fashion of our own lives.” (342).
“Rereading flatters me by allowing me the vantage of a god, or at least of an author” (343).
Identity as will to repeat: you are (or you become) what you’d like to be, what you reread—what you repeat.
Personal identity, self-making, as far as reading as re-reading go, is a process of self-construction through repetition.

Otherness as that which transforms us when we innovate, “Otherness, that is, is produced in an active or eventlike relation—we might call it a relating” (22); breaking down the familiar as welcoming the other. Innovation transforms the self.
Private creation vs public invention—a number of pragmatic issues lead from one to the other. (Ignora que it may be creative for the individual but significant for culture at large—already done).
Significance of private creation may register much later:
“Hence inventiveness is not an inherent property of an act or a created object: it can only be retrospectively, and never certainly, assigned” (23)
“It is in the acknowledgement of the other human being’s uniqueness and therefore of the impossibility of finding general rules or schemata to account fully for him or her that one can be said to encounter the other” (24). The response to this otherness creatively changes us: “In this process the other is transformed from other to same, but the same is not the same as it was before the encounter” (24).
Reading as “registering what is unique about the shaping of language, thought, and feeling in a particular work” (25).
(Problem: maybe we’ll register what is unique for us. But what is unique is not necessairly the main point of the other’s action—JAGL).
“what I affirm when I respond to the text in a way that does justice to its otherness is not simply a particular argument or arrangement of words but the creativity of the author or authors in bringing into existence that argument or those words” (25).
(But the author’s otherness is not necessarily the reader’s otherness. What was ‘the same’ for the author may be 'other' for the reader).
“a full response to the otherness of the text includes an awareness of, a respect for, and in a certain sense (...) a taking of responsibility for, the creativity of its author” (25).
“we need to consider the other as a relating: it is not the text ‘itself’ butr my singular and active relation to the particular configuration of possibilities represented by the text that is the site of alterity” (26).
“Hence the need to repeat the work, as a temporal, sequential experience, if on wishes to repeat the apprehension of its otherness (though exact repetition can neve occur).” (27) (—cf. the notion that rereading enhances literariness)
Creativity required in response to creative work:
“Only a new, unpredictable, singular, creative act, as an inventive event in its turn, can do justice to a literary work as literary work” (27)
Creation involves risk (27; cf. Toolan también)— Risk and trust.
Responsibility of the (critic): “As when I create a new artifact or mode of thought, my obligation is to refashion what I think and what I am in order to take the fullest possible account of—to respect, safeguard, and learn from—the otherness and singularity of the other and to do so without any certainty about the consequences of my act” (27-28).
Unpredictability of ethical demands vs. specific obligations of moral demands. (28). Primacy of interpersonal relations in using terms like responsibility and ethics.
Responsibility for the other is at the heart of creativity (29)
(Vs Attridge: más enfasis en la transitoriedad de muchos aspectos creativos, y también cuestionar la absoluta novedad y ‘otherness’. Mas bien una cuestión de posicionamiento: lo periférico se vuelve central).
“The discourses at our disposal may provide a way of understanding virtually everything about an innovative act—its psychic ingredients, its cultural matrix, its etiology and technology—but they will leave unanswered one crucial question, how does the new, the other, come into being when all we have is what we have?” (30).
(Respuesta: Through interaction. Absolutely new for whom?).
Otherness and novelty are irreducible to conceptual predictive knowledge, otherwise there also would not be such thing as responsibility or ethics (30).
